Survey says: A 2026 VoicesDMV Community Insights survey from Gallup and the Greater Washington Community Foundation shows the negative impact of federal cuts on the nation’s capital. The whole region was impacted by housing, affordability, and the job market, but D.C. was hit the hardest. Confidence in the availability of good jobs fell 14 points in 2026. About 1 in 7 DMV residents have visited a food bank. Many locals continue to struggle to afford basic needs: 1 in 5 went without health care or medicine, 17 percent without food, and 9 percent lacked adequate housing. While most DMV residents are thriving, 14 percent plan to leave the region in the next year. Minus one point for federal cuts. -1 [WTOP]
Center back: Yesterday the Post reported that convicted felon and President Donald Trump now says the Kennedy Center could be deadly and that his assessment of its condition has gotten worse since his own name was added to it and funding dried up. But the Post interviewed former staffers who say the building needed substantial repairs and maintenance but none felt the building was unsafe; one says they are not closing the building for renovations, they’re closing it because the venue can’t “secure artists or the audiences needed to make the economics work.” A lawyer for the anonymous whistleblowers says the space received funding for repairs that weren’t completed. Minus one point for failing to renovate. -1 [Post, NBC4]
Ad exec: Trump is airing TV campaign ads and taxpayers are footing the bill for an estimated $1 million. The ads show him walking down a hallway as he warns of a “final battle” against “globalists” and “warmongers” as he did in his 2024 campaign ad. The White House claims the ads are PSAs that remind “Americans to love their country and understand what makes it worth defending, at home, at our borders, and abroad.” Critics say the use of federal funds could be an “abuse of power” and “an impeachable offense.” Lawmakers from both parties have expressed concern about the ads, and the White House website has a page dedicated to defending them. Minus one point because we never want to hear the phrase “no one is above the law” again. -1 [AP News, NYT]
Arch review: On Friday, CNN reported that the Trump administration plans to end a key part of the review process for his proposed arch, disrupting a preservation law that’s been in place since 1966. Eliminating Section 106 review would terminate the consulting process and allow the arch to bypass a significant hurdle in the approval process. Trump’s plan to use the arch as a “military complex” is a new development that will require more review. Senate Dems plan to introduce legislation to stop Trump from proceeding with Kennedy Center and arch plans. Minus one point for fast-tracking and destroying the review process but plus one point for pushback. 0 [WTOP, Axios]
