PAGOSA SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- It's the second week in a row that Archuleta County Sheriff told people to seek higher ground, but while some are heading for safety, others are lending a helping hand.

The flood has taken a toll on businesses and houses in the area while sweeping things away.

"Just the way that this water has taken the land. I..I have never seen anything like it. Like walk out at your house, and there's an eight-foot drop, and the land is gone," Local Business Owner Dawn Turner said.

John Nelson and members of San Juan Back Country Horsemen helped save ten horses and a handful of chickens from a ranch in the flood danger zone.

"So that's what we are getting ready to do. Additionally, you know, all this that's happening in town is front and center right now," Nelson said.

Nelson said the Sheriff called him asking for help around 9:00 P.M., and they were working until midnight.

"We were beat. We were tired, but those horses were there, and these people were just radiating, you know, they were happy with what we'd done and proud of what we'd done, and that was great to see," Nelson said.
