AKRON, Ohio (News Talk 1480 WHBC) – The old Route 8 high-level bridge over the Cuyahoga River in Akron was brought down by explosive charges Sunday morning.
During the blasts, the new Route 8 bridge was closed in the vicinity and there was a thousand-foot safety perimeter.
The bridge was built in 1953.
Northbound and southbound traffic are now on the new bridge (seen behind the smoke and debris in the above picture).
A separate northbound bridge will be built at the site of the former structure, to be opened in the Fall of 2028.
